Israel's treatment of Ethiopians 'racist' #patterns

NAZARETH, Israel // Health officials in Israel are subjecting many female Ethiopian immigrants to a controversial long-term birth control drug in what Israeli women’s groups allege is a racist policy to reduce the number of black babies. The contraceptive, known as Depo Provera, which is given by injection every three months, is considered by many doctors as a birth control method of last resort because of problems treating its side effects.

However, according to a report published last week, use of the contraceptive by Israeli doctors has risen threefold over the past few years. Figures show that 57 per cent of Depo Provera users in Israel are Ethiopian, even though the community accounts for less than two per cent of the total population. About 90,000 Ethiopians have been brought to Israel under the Law of Return since the 1980s, but their Jewishness has subsequently been questioned by some rabbis and is doubted by many ordinary Israelis.

Ethiopians are reported to face widespread discrimination in jobs, housing and education and it recently emerged that their blood donations were routinely discarded. “This is about reducing the number of births in a community that is black and mostly poor,” said Hedva Eyal, the author of the report by Woman to Woman, a feminist organisation based in Haifa, in northern Israel. “The unspoken policy is that only children who are white and Ashkenazi are wanted in Israel,” she said, referring to the term for European Jews who founded Israel and continue to dominate its institutions.

Women’s groups were alerted to the widespread use of Depo Provera in the Ethiopian community in 2008 when Rachel Mangoli, who runs a day care centre for 120 Ethiopian children in Bnei Braq, a suburb of Tel Aviv, observed that she had received only one new child in the previous three years. “I started to think about how strange the situation was after I had to send back donated baby clothes because there was no one in the community to give them to,” she said.

Claims of rising racism in Greece as young Egyptian tortured by employer
Nov. 13 2012
As he arrived on his bike for a 3am clock-in at the family-owned bakery on the Greek island of Salamina, Walid Taleb had no reason to think his 10-hour shift that morning would be different from any other.
But Saturday, November 3rd, was to prove different – the 29-year-old Egyptian migrant disappeared into a maelstrom of beating at the hands of his employer, his son and two accomplices, who chained him up and tortured him for 18 hours in a stable.
That ordeal was followed by indifference by medics, who said he didn’t require hospitalisation after he was found beaten black and blue on a village street, and by police, who detained him in a cell for four nights after the attack.
On that Saturday morning, Walid’s trouble started two hours before the end of his shift, when baker Yiorgos Sgourdos’s son, a 19-year-old just back from his compulsory military service, told the Egyptian to clear off and never come back.
Unpaid wages
Taken aback at his rash dismissal, Walid felt there was little he could do as an immigrant with no papers. But he did ask for the two months’ unpaid wages he was owed.
Hearing that, the baker’s son twice punched Walid in the face. With that, the father appeared on the scene with another man, and they joined in the beating.
They searched him, and in a pocket found a large sum, about €12,000, a discovery that fuelled, they would later tell an examining magistrate, their suspicion that he was stealing from the premises. It’s a charge that his friends strenuously deny, pointing out that, unable to open bank accounts, they entrusted their hard-earned savings to the care of Walid, whom his compatriots saw as safe and trustworthy.
Walid’s three tormenters then placed a ring and chain around his neck, bundled him into a car and drove a short distance to a stable, next to the baker’s home.
That’s when the horror started for Walid, who says the baker and his gang seemed to be in for the long haul: police later found water, food, alcohol and cigarettes in the outhouse. In the ordeal that followed, he was beaten in shifts and told he would be killed.
“ ‘You will die here and here you will be buried.’ The son told me that his father had a gun and that he would kill me,” Walid told this newspaper, adding that he was certain he would never leave the stable alive.
But when the baker and the others left the stable to open the bakery on Sunday morning, Walid managed to use a rock to smash the ring binding him to the ground. Stumbling outside, his face bruised, and unable to talk, he wandered for a couple of hours around the village before collapsing in front of a petrol station, when shocked passersby called the police.
Taken to hospital by ambulance, Walid’s second ordeal then started. When doctors said there was no need to keep him in, the police took him into custody, detaining him for three nights in a cell with criminal suspects on Salamina and a night in the Athens “aliens’ bureau”, where preparations were made to deport him to Egypt.
No medical treatment
Contacted yesterday, Greece’s police press office said it would need two working days to answer written questions from The Irish Times about Walid’s treatment.
Rabab Hassan, a volunteer with the Egyptian community in Greece, said: “Walid received no medical treatment in all this time, apart from some paracetamol given to him by the police.”
With the help of a lawyer, Hassan managed to secure Walid’s release from custody four nights after the attack.
The same day, Sgourdos, the baker, was also released, subject to restrictive bail terms. Along with his three co-accused, he faces charges of robbery, abduction and grievous bodily harm and illegally employing an alien. If found guilty, he could go to prison for at least 10 years.
What has shocked observers is that the 59-year-old Sgourdos is a former local councillor and deputy mayor for conservative New Democracy on Salamina.
Last Friday, as four friends carried him out of a Piraeus courtroom where he testified to an examining magistrate, Walid’s pain was etched on his face. Barely able to whisper and with his head slumped on the shoulder of a friend, he dozed off while fellow Egyptians from Salamina looked on in disbelief as they recounted the unbelievable and unpredicted ordeal among themselves. They said he was still passing blood six days after the incident.
Alarmed that Walid had not returned home from work, they had spent hours on Saturday and Sunday morning looking for their friend. When they asked at the bakery on Saturday, they were told Walid had left as normal.
“On Sunday morning I spoke to the baker, who offered me coffee and walked around with me looking for Walid’s bike. He even said to me that by not showing up for work, he was destroying his business,” said Mustafa Samir, as he sat with Walid in a Piraeus hospital on Saturday.
His ordeal is more proof that casual brutality towards foreigners is on the rise in Greece, where Golden Dawn, an openly violent, fascist party that demands the immediate deportation of all illegal migrants and the mining of the country’s borders, has 18 MPs in the 300-seat parliament.
UN response
Characterising the attack as one of “striking brutality”, the Athens office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, which recently set up a racist violence recording network with a number of non-governmental organisations, said it can be considered a racially motivated act “since it is doubtful that such an act would have been the same had the victim been Greek”.
It added that the response of the authorities in Walid’s case “follows a pattern” noted in a recent report from the network whereby survivors lacking legal documents have been arrested with a view to deportation after going to the police to report racist violence against them.
“If this happened to a Greek in Egypt, what would the reaction of the Greek government have been?” Walid, who is married and has two young daughters, asked from his hospital bed.

Racist Website Discovers Hunger Striker Cameron Whitten #opBlitzKrieg #Portland #ows #occupy

Posted by Denis C. Theriault on Sat, Jun 23, 2012 at 8:41 AM, via @mz_chief

Cameron Whitten, now on Day 22 of a housing-justice-themed hunger strike outside city hall, texted me late last night to say he wound up as a discussion topic on this terrible and strange internet rabbit hole of white-pride hate. This morning, I was pointed to an Occupy Portland Media Collective video in which Whitten shares his thoughts about his discovery:

“That’s racist.”

But beyond calling out racists, the video also supplies a concise re-statement of Whitten’s aims—a good way to take some sour lemons and turn them into some kind of lemonade. (Which, technically, Whitten could still consume and enjoy.)

(Video) “From Police Brutality to Hate Crimes: How can we win justice?”

In late April, 2012, a transgender woman, Brandy Martell, was murdered in front of her friends in Oakland, CA in what was presumed to be a hate crime. Many activist argue that the Oakland police and city council have not only been ineffective in stopping crime, they also use it to cover their tracks. The unchecked power of the police smashed the Occupy movement, and is regularly used to abuse youth of color, and murder unarmed people.

Shortly after the murder of Brandy Martell, the Oakland Police Department murdered another unarmed youth, Alan Blueford, who was weeks away from graduating from Skyline High School.

On June 9, 2012 family members of Alan Blueford and Brandy Martell joined anti-police brutality and anti-oppression activists for this panel discussion in Oakland, CA about racism, police brutality, anti-LGBT oppression, and how to win justice for Alan Blueford and Brandy Martell.

#laughriot via @TREEOR2X4DESIGN “OK, This video takes the cake”

A provocative installation in Sweden about female genital circumcision has been labeled sexist and racist after the country’s culture minister actively participated in the provocative mock-mutilation show.

Artist Makode Linde presented his mind-blowing “Painful Cake” installation for World Art Day at Stockholm’s Moderna Muséet on April 15.

The cake was made in the caricatured form of a naked torso of an African tribal woman with the live, make-up-covered head of the Afro-European artist attached to it. Makode Linde was hiding his body within the serving table.

To make the process correspond to genital mutilation, the installation was cut starting from the nether-regions, revealing the blood-colored interior of the red velvet cake.

To make the allegory even more convincing, the artist screamed in pain every time a visitor cut a slice of the brown body on to his or her plate.

Makode Linde could be celebrating true success of the installation by publishing photos and videos of the event in his Facebook account, but the appearance of Sweden’s Culture Minister at the installation created a scandal with a racist twist.

Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth poured more fuel on to the fire of controversy by a sticking a knife into the macabre chocolate body to claim a wedge, sparking outrage in Sweden.

The artist commented the situation in Facebook saying, “Documentation from my female genital mutilation cake performance earlier today at Stockholm MoMA. This is after getting my vagaga [sic] mutilated by the minister of culture, Lena Adelsohn Liljeroth. Before cutting me up she whispered ‘Your life will be better after this’ in my ear.”

Sweden’s National Afro-Swedish Association rushed to stigmatize the event as “a racist spectacle,” informed Swedish newspaper The Local. The Association demanded Liljeroth’s resignation for taking part in the performance.

The minister dismissed the suggestions, reminding that true art must be heartfelt.

“I was invited to speak at World Art Day about art’s freedom and the right to provoke. And then they wanted me to cut the cake. [He] claims that it challenges a romanticized and exoticized view from the West about something that is really about violence and racism. Art needs to be provocative.”

As Makode explained: “If one pulls things out of context, it is easy to feel offended or angry […] I am using an old caricature of black – this ‘Blackface’ that whites used once in order to mock blacks. Then, I worked on strengthening the cartoons to illustrate the prejudices that exist.”

Want To Report Airport Racial Profiling? There’s an App for That

radicalsocialworker:

Since Sept. 11, Sikhs have been subjected to ethnic and religious profiling at the airport that the community has struggled for years to combat. Those with dark skin, or people who wear turbans have been pulled aside for extra pat downs and discriminatory questioning while trying to get through airport security. Community reports show that at some airports, a full 100 percent of Sikh travelers must go through secondary screening before they make it to their gate. Through it all, the federal government has insisted that it doesn’t engage in profiling. Now, advocates are turning to technology to help people report the profiling they experience at airports.

Today, the Sikh Coalition unveiled a mobile app called “FlyRights” to help Sikh travelers and others who are subjected to profiling at the airport to report their concerns straight to the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration.

“The TSA asserts it doesn’t profile,” the Sikh Coalition’s Director of Programs Amardeep Singh said in a statement. “This application will allow us to better assess whether that’s true. All travelers now have an easy way of speaking to their government on the issue of airport profiling.”

The Sikh Coalition says that part of the impetus for the app was the perplexingly few incidents officially reported to the government, given the community’s actual experiences. During the first half of 2011, DHS’s Office of Civil Rights received only 11 official complaints of improper TSA screenings, which the group says doesn’t comport with reality.

“Up until now, victims of racial profiling at our nation’s airports had no easy way to call attention to this unfortunate trend,” Rep. Judy Chu said in a statement. “The Sikh Coalition’s new app changes that. Travelers now have the power to fight racial profiling right at their fingertips.”

The app, out today, is available for both Android and iPhone users.
